The English Toy Terrier is a native vulnerable breed, and as such, great care must be taken to maintain and improve the health of the breed. Whilst English Toy Terriers are relatively healthy with few known heritable diseases, all breeders should ensure that health testing has been carried out on both the sire and dam prior to a mating, and final decisions on matings to be informed by the results of the tests.
All breeders should test for:
1. Patella Luxation
2. Juvenile Dilated Cardiomyopathy (JDCM)
3. Xanthinuria
Screening is also available and recommended for the following:
4. Von Willebrand’s Disease (vWD)
5. Hereditary Deafness
6. Eye Screening
