Cleaning English Toy Terrier Ears

Another essential grooming task is cleaning your English toy Terrier’s ears to make sure that there is no excessive ear wax build-up. Regular ear cleaning can prevent painful and dangerous infections, and minimise the risk of infection by ear mites.

English Toy Terrier
English Toy Terriers, like Ruby here, have candle-flame shaped ears and these ears need cleaning!

Examine your dog’s ears as part of a regular Health Check and clean them as necessary.

If you notice any unusual odour, discharge, redness, irritation, swelling do not go ahead and clean the ears – contact your vet instead and seek professional veterinary advice first.

This video from the PDSA shows how to clean your dog’s ears safely. Do not use a cotton swab / Q-tip as there is a risk of damaging the ear canal.

You will need:

  • Dog Ear Cleaning Solution (available from your vet, pet stores, and many online retailers)
  • Cotton wool or a soft cloth

As shown in the video above

  1. Put the ear cleaning solution into the entrance of the ear canal (always read the label on the product and follow the manufacturer’s guidance).
  2. Massage your dog’s ear to spread the solution around the ear to break down wax.
  3. Let your dog shake their head – and stand clear!
  4. Wipe clean with cotton wool or a soft cloth.

Don’t forget to make this a fun experience for our dog with praise and rewards.

Cleaning your English Toy Terrier’s ears is one the essential grooming tasks required to ensure your dog’s health and well-being along with a regular health check, dental care, nail care, coat-care and bathing.
