THE ENGLISH TOY TERRIER (BLACK & TAN) CLUB

Critiques – ETT Club March Open Show 2023 – A Stewart

25th March 2023

Judge: Mr Andrew Stewart (Ingerdorm)

I would like to thank the office bearers and committee for inviting me to judge the club’s spring open show, held in conjunction with the UK Toy Dog Society.

More than a few flat toplines which mostly resulted in them with high tail carriage whilst on the move, this does spoil the outline, but I think ‘compromise’ is the key word.

Overall I thought the quality was very high and the Open bitch class was probably one of the best classes I have had the pleasure of judging.

Minor Puppy Dog (3,1)

1st Snell ‘SKIN DEEP MINT CONDITION’ (imp Nor) – 2 nice babies at different stages of development. 1st – 8 months and maturing nicely. He has a lovely head piece, dark almond shaped eyes that are set nicely. Flattish skull and typical ears that he used well. Lovely neck and correct topline. Sound front and rear. Has good thumbprints. He moved a little more ‘together’ than 1st, probably due to the fact he is 2 months older. Shown in good condition.

2nd Inch ‘EDALENE UPSIDE DOWN’ – a real baby at only 6 months. He has all the qualities to do well, he was just not moving as precise as his opponent today. He has a real elegant silhouette. Lovely arched neck and proud head carriage. Compact body with correct topline, slight curve from behind the shoulder to his loin. He has a beautiful glossy coat that was shining like a new pin. Excellent tan and markings.

Puppy Dog (2,0)

1st Imrie ‘AMALRIC PACO RABANNE’ – cracking wedged shaped head with super candle flame shaped ears. Dark almond shaped eyes giving a wicked expression. He has a good length of neck. Topline is a little flat for ideal? Sound straight front with compact feet. His rear is well angulated with quality muscle tone already. Excellent rich tan and quality markings. Well handled and moved out well. Unfortunately his tail is held too high on the move and this does spoil his outline.

2nd Partington-Palmer & Davies ‘WITCHSTONE SOMETHIN BREWIN’ – handsome headed dog with good ears and a dark eye that was almond in shape. Strong graceful neck, straight front with fine, yet strong bone. He could be a bit more compact in body for ideal? A tidy rear with good turn of stifle. He moved out freely with that typical extended trot. Hope he’s finished growing. Well handled.

Junior Dog (1,0)

1st Snell ‘MORETONIA ROYAL NAVY’ – A strongly made exhibit than needs a little more confidence. He has a good head, wedged shape, flat skull and fill under the eyes. He has a strong neck, correct desired topline and carries his tail properly on the move. clean front and rear. Good rich tan.

Limit Dog (8,1)

1st Dennison ‘ETTOLOGY BOUNTEOUS BARNEY’ JW – This handsome lad is full of charisma and attitude. He has a super well balanced outline. He has a cracking wedge shaped head. Well set candle flame ears that he uses so well. Strong neck of good length, he has the correct topline, deep chest and well sprung ribs. He is constructed so well, absolutely sound in all directions. His bone is fine, but still has great strength and he looks as if he could really handle himself in a rat pit. His coat was gleaming and presented in first class condition. His thumbprints could be a touch darker and eye a little more almond shaped but that’s nit picking. His outline and soundness took him all the way to BD & RBIS. One that should finish with his title.

2nd Haffenden & Wood ‘NASABE DON’T TELL HIM’ – Another with a lovely clean and elegant outline. A better eye than 1st, correct wedged type head, good dentition and underjaw. Excellent arch to his neck, sound shoulders and a straight front with compact feet. Well bodied with well sprung ribs. Firm rear with quality muscle tone. He moves ultra soundly in both directions, just wish he would keep his head up whilst on the move – it does spoil his moving outline. Super tan and thumbprints. Shown in super condition.

3rd Whitehouse ‘TWOWAYSHOUSE TUDOR KING FOR DALMONDE’

Open Dog (3,1)

1st Harman ‘WITCHSTONE CRAZY HORSE AT BOIMANS’ – upstanding male who stands like a rock on the table. He possesses a beautiful head, cracking ears and a dark keen eye. Super neck and correct topline. He is compact in body and has well sprung ribs and has depth of chest. He has the correct turn of stifle in the rear. Lovely rich tan and has good thumbprints. He moves ok from the rear but a touch messy in front. Well handled and schooled.

2nd Love ‘WITCHSTONE FOLLOW THE DREAM WITH TETTOY’ – cleanly built with a good silhouette. Wedged shaped head, flat skull and nice ears. Dark intelligent eyes and strong muzzle. I liked his neck and compact body shape. Straight front with fine bone, compact feet with good thumbprints. Ok rear with well angulated rear. He moves a little close behind today and a touch messy in front.

Veteran Dog (2,1)

1st Nagler ‘RAMSES ROYAL RETURNER’ – 8 years old. Handler and dog thoroughly enjoying themselves in the ring today. He has a nice head and expression, a good dark almond eye. Strong muzzle and firm underjaw. Correct neck and topline and one that carried his tail correctly. His movement was a touch erratic in both directions but did settle down when it came to the challenge. Presented in first class condition.

Minor Puppy Bitch (4,1)

1st Harman & Wood ‘NASABE IT’S ON THE CARDS FOR BOIMANS’ – adorable headed little 6 month old puppy. She moved the best in the class and was quite confident. Very pretty in head, dark almond eye with a glint of naughtiness. She has a good length of neck and compact in body. Sound front and rear. Lovely tan. Her coat was shining like a new pin. Well handled. Topline a touch flat.

2nd Dowson ‘LASAGESSE GO YOUR OWN WAY WITH BINKOTA’ – another very nice 6 month old puppy. She had a better ‘desired’ topline than 1st. i liked her head properties, although a touch finer in back skull than 1st. She had the correct front and rear. Good thumbprints and a rich tan. Didn’t  move as freely as 1st, but has lots of potential.

3rd Inch ‘EDALENE SCOOPS AHOY’ –a special mention to this exhibit, what a smart outline and very nice head properties, just needs to sort her ears out.

Puppy Bitch (3,0)

1st Haffenden & Wood ‘NASABE PLAY THE GAME’ – BPIS. What a delight! The most appealing silhouette when she’s standing attentive to her handler. She is so well balanced. Ultra feminine in head, dark sparkling eyes, wedged shaped head with super candle flame ears. Her neck is arched and graceful. Well laid shoulders with tight elbows. Her chest is narrow and deep, well sprung ribs and a tidy rear which was well angulated. She is sound as a pound on the move, that typical front extended trot and a smooth and precise rear action. Her tan is rich and in all the correct places. Her black was shiny and glossy. Shown in lovely condition. Well handled and schooled. Delightful temperament.

2nd Whitehouse AMALRIC COCO CHANEL WITH DALMONDE’ – not as refined as 1st, a touch more sturdy. Good quality head which is balanced, dark almond eye and good finish of muzzle. She has a nice neck and sound shoulders. Compact body shape with well angulated rear. Her tan could be a little richer and tends to carry her tail too high on the move.

3rd Warren ‘LASAGESSE ANGEL OF HARLEM WITH RHYMSWELL’

Junior Bitch (3,0)

1st Haffenden & Wood ‘WITCHSTONE STORM A BREWING AT NASABE’ – compact and elegant in outline. Her coat was in beautiful order, glossy and shining like a new pin. Her eyes were dark and almond shaped. Her skull flat and ears that were well set, although she could use them more to her advantage. Lovely neck and sound shoulders, deep chest, well sprung ribs and correct low set tail. She carried her tail the best in the class. Excellent rich chesnut tan markings. Well handled.

2nd Johnson ‘MORETONIA ROYAL WREN’ – her tan wasn’t as rich as first and movement a touch messy today. Good outline, proud head carriage on a graceful neck. Correct front and rear. Pretty head with a pleasing expression.

Graduate Bitch (2,0)

1st Jackson ‘APPLETOR I’LL TELL THE BEES AT DANDYTWEED’ – she has a balanced wedged shaped head, good ears and clean dentition. Sparkling dark eyes that gave an alert expression. Nice fine bone throughout. Correct topline and low set tail. Smart compact feet.  Another with a cracking glossy coat.  Moved out freely in front and a sound rear.

2nd Love ‘TETTOY A WHOLE NEW WORLD’ – smaller than 1st. her front movement could be better, she has a slight tendency to hackney sometimes. She has a very pretty head with all the essentials. Correct neck and topline. Her rear is well angulated and has nice muscle tone.

Post Graduate Bitch (3,1)

1st Dicker NEERODAN THYME BOMB’ – she has lovely rich chestnut markings and her black coat was glossy. She has a well balanced silhouette and elegant outline. Feminine wedged shaped head, dark almond shaped eye and nice thin ears. Lovely arched neck leading to well laid shoulders, clean straight front with fine bone. Well sprung ribs and a tidy rear with good muscle tone. Carries her tail correctly on the move.

2nd Whitehouse AMALRIC COCO CHANEL WITH DALMONDE’ – repeat

Limit Bitch (5,1)

1st Conway & Oakden ‘NEERODAN THYME TO SHINE’ – easily the best mover in this class, a lovely typical extended trot and a precise sound rear. Pretty headed, so feminine. Cracking dark eyes and candle flame ears that were set closely. She has an elegant neck, correct body and topline. Her tail is low set and she carries it correctly. Her bone is fine, yet strong. Not in her best bib and tucker today. One with lots of potential.

2nd Imrie ‘AMALRIC STORM ANGELS’ – nice for size and shape. her head has the correct wedge shape, good ears that were set high upon the back of the skull. Super neck. Sound shoulders with a clean straight front, compact feet with good thumbprints. Her tail is well angulated and firm with muscle tone. Topline a touch flat and carries her tail too high on the move. Shown in pristine condition.

3rd Inch ‘EDALENE COURT AND SPARK’ JW

Open Bitch (7,3)

1st Dixon ‘CH. WITCHSTONE UNEXPECTED GIFT’ – what a fabulous class to judge, it could have gone to any of them to be very honest. Textbook outline. Fabulous head and wicked expression, those dark almond eyes were captivating! Typical candle flame ears that she uses so well. Her neck is so elegant, super sound shoulders with a good front, she has fine bone but in no way ‘weedy’. Her topline is correct and has the desired low set tail. Movement was a joy to watch, so sound in all directions. Shown in first class condition. What more can i add? She’s special. RBB.

2nd Haffenden & Wood ‘CH. WITCHSTONE MINNEHAHA’ – one that I often admired a few years ago, usually battling it out with the late Terry & Dominic’s  ‘CH. Sharex burning love for Dobrugh’. At 6 years old she is still in tip top condition, and i bet could easily still win CC’s. She is handled beautifully and so at one with her handler. I can’t really say much more,  she has quality in abundance.

3rd Haffenden & Wood ‘CH. NASABE LILY MARLENE’ JW

Veteran Bitch (2,1)

1st Leonard & Gourley ‘CH. WITCHSTONE CHEYENNE FALLS’ – this bitch oozed breed type and for me today ticked all my boxes. She has the most fabulous silhouette, well balanced and cleanly built. Her head is so feminine and pretty but still retains that ‘terrier’ look. Flat and narrow skull with those typical candle flame ears that were set on the back of the skull and close together. She has eyes that were dark; almond shaped and really did sparkle. Her neck is elegant and flows into well laid shoulders. Clean straight front with the correct compact feet – complete with thumb marks. Her topline is strong and she has a compact body shape. She has well sprung ribs and a well cut up loin. Her rear is firm with good muscle tone and has the correct angulation. She is an eye catching mover, super extended trot in front and an effortless rear action.  Nice to see her carrying her tail correctly at all times. Shown in beautiful condition and well handled. BB, BIS & BVIS.

2nd Dicker ‘CH. NEERODAN NAUGHTY NANCY’ – at 11 years old this old girl was thoroughly enjoying herself in the ring. Classic head piece, almond shaped eye and good ears. She has a full set of teeth, and still in amazing condition. Her front is still sound, her rear perhaps a little shaky but at 11 – who cares??? Fabulous outgoing temperament.

Special Beginners Bitch (2,1)

1st Hunter ‘WAUKESHA BELLE OF JOY’ – a pleasing outline on this girl. Pretty headed, nice ears that were well used. Correct elegant neck and ok topline. Sound front and rear and moved well in both directions. Shown in super condition. Well handled and schooled.
