Critiques from Mr Domenico Santoriello

The English Toy Terrier (Black & Tan) Club – Saturday 30th March 2024

Many thanks to the committee for the honour of judging at their show held in conjunction with UK Toy Dog, to the exhibitors for the excellent entry and for staying on what was a long day for the dogs.

It was an interesting entry to judge. Different heads, toplines and movement so I did have to compromise in some classes. I was concerned with the rear movement on some of the ETTs today, some being rather close behind and some flicking their legs out as they were going away. There were also some that I really liked, however carried their tail far too high on the move which spoils the outline we strive for.

Open Dog was a lovely class to judge, but today I felt the quality was in the bitches, it was interesting to see that my Best Veteran In Show is the dam of my Best Dog and Best Bitch and my Best Puppy in Show is the daughter of my Best in Show.

MPD (3) Nice class to start the day where I am sure they will swap places in the future. 1 Keylock and Collins’ Lasagesse Paint It Black, quality 8 months pleasing head properties, well set ears, dark eye, super neck, straight front, would prefer a slightly more curvy topline. Moved soundly with good reach. Super temperament on this boy. 2 Forsythe and Pevy’s Witchstone Won’t Be Silent by Richpin, 8 months, super head and expression, good neck into correct topline. Super profile action however just preferred rear movement of 1 going away today. 3 Howard’s Lasagesse Jumpin’ Jack Flash.

PD (1) Partington-Palmer and Palmer’s Etruria Hear The Word, 9 months elegant male who presents a nice outline in profile. Typical head, flat skull, candle shape ears. Moved well with good extension and drive.

J (2) 1 Imrie’s Almaric Butch Cassidy, impressive, well built male. He presents a beautiful outline. He has a typical wedge shaped head, dark, expressive eyes and super, candle-flame ears. Nicely arched neck into well laid shoulders and nicely curved topline. Well angulated rear. He has the typical extended trot and a very sound rear. Correct markings throughout. Today he carried his tail just a little too high for me to award him higher. 2 Holley’s Valeast Dream of Dreams, 12 months, rangier and not the head of 1, slightly longer cast. Moved OK.

G(1) Wines’ Etruria Say The Word, litter brother to PD, this was a good litter. Elegant 9 month old with a typical outline. Typical wedge shape head, dark almond shaped eyes, small well set ears. Well arched neck into good shoulders and correct topline. Moved out with good reach and drive. I’d like to see him when more mature. BPD & RBPIS

PGD (1) Inch’s Edalene Upside Down JW, up to size male, head could be stronger to balance him out, good neck into well laid shoulders and correct topline. Well arched feet. Good rear angulation. Moved OK.

LD (5,1) 1 Forsyth & Pevy’s Kikuchi Hollywood, easy winner here, a well constructed young male, just turning a year old but did not look out of place. He has a masculine wedge shaped head, flat skull, dark expressive eyes, and correct high set ears. Lovely neck into well laid shoulders, good length to body, correct tail-set, he shows good reach and drive in profile, could be a touch cleaner in rear movement going away today. 2 Partington-Palmer and Davies’ Witchstone Something Brewin, I judged him as a youngster where he was all legs, he has matured well. Pleasing head, dark eye and correct ear set. Nice neck into good shoulders, shorter cast than the winner, correct tailset. Could have moved with more enthusiasm today. 3 Reeve’s Galvizach Royal Emerald

OD (8,1) A super class to judge! 1 Leonard’s CH Nasabe Don’t Tell Him, I awarded this boy BP as a very young puppy and I am glad to see he has fulfilled his early promise. He is masculine with just the right amount of elegance, he has the correct long, wedge shaped head, dark almond shaped eyes and well shaped ears sitting on a flat skull. Super neck into well laid shoulders, straight front and well arched feet. Correct topline, curving from behind the shoulder and falling away again to his low-set tail. Good rear angulation. He comes alive on the move, he just flows around the ring with a typical extended trot and excellent rear drive. A joy to judge. BIS. 2 Harman’s Ch Witchstone Crazy Horse at Boimans, 5 years male, he presents a typical ETT outline, he has a long narrow head, well set dark eyes, high set ears. Straight front, arched neck into correct topline and tailset. Good rear angulation. Moved at the correct pace and showing excellent reach and drive. Could not be denied RBD, a very worthy Champion. 3rd Forsythe’s CH Witchstone Raindance avec Richpin JW.

VD(3) 1 Francis and Blatchford’s CH Witchstone Not Apache On Me for Peopleton JW, a favourite of mine, and another worthy Champion, up to size but he is so well constructed and has lots to admire. He has a lovely head, long and narrow with dark almond eyes and well small well set ears. Nice arch to his neck into well laid shoulders and correct topline. Well set tail which he carries correctly. Well muscled rear and literally flows round the ring with excellent reach and drive. BVD. 2 Ramsden Pray You Catch Me, 7 years in excellent condition, pleasing head and ear, compact in outline. Good rear angulation and moved soundly. 3rd Nagler’s Ramses Royal Returner.

SBD 1 Keylock & Collins Lasagesse Paint It Black

MPB (3) 1 Leonard’s Witchstone Silent Prayer, 8 months, easy winner here, absolutely loved her outline, feminine head, beautiful eye and expression, well placed candle-flame ears sat on a flat skull, graceful neck into well laid shoulders and shapely topline and low-set tailset. Straight front, lovely thumbprints and well arched feet. Gleaming coat. She gave her handler a hard time, but when she did settle she had excellent reach and rear drive. Excellent rear angulation with good muscletone for her age. I cannot wait to see her when she has matured up. Looking at the catalogue I can see why I love her, she is out of my favourite girl, CH Witchstone Cheyanne Falls and by todays BIS winner. A future star. RBB, BPIS. 2 Imrie’s Almaric Mandisa Indy, feminine girl who has a pleasing outline. I preferred the head of 1, her ears could have been stronger today. Good neck into compact body and correct topline. Straight front. Correct tailset. Moved soundly. 3 Crowley’s Adargwn Geneva.

PB (3,1) 1 Dean-Armitt’s Twowayhouse Touch Of Class, 11 months, elegant outline, long wedge shaped head, good eye, ears could be stronger but are well set. Compact body with an ideal topline, correct tailset carried low. Moved soundly. 2 Peter’s Ettology Cherry Bakewell at Troysel, 11 months, another with a nice outline. Pleasing head and expression, high set ears. She has a compact body with correct topline. Felt she could have carried herself better today. Moved OK.

JB (3) Green’s Three Times A Lady, 8 months who presents an ideal outline. Her head is still to finish, and could have more width to skull, but she has a beautiful earset. Good neck into well laid shoulders. Correct topline and tailset. Moved out with good reach and drive. Would benefit from a touch less weight. 2nd Reeve’s Gillings Future Star. Smaller than 1, good head properties. Not the tailset of 1. Moved OK.
GB (3) 1 Crowley’s Adargwn Geneva, 3rd in MPB, at her first show and was unsettled in her first class, she pulled it together here though. Prettiest of heads, high set candle-flame ears which she uses at all times. She has a beautiful shape, compact in body, correct topline and tailset. When settled she moved with pleasing reach and drive. Just needs time. 2nd Marsden’s Galvizach Royal Amethyst of Regalriver, in good condition. Long, wedge shape head, dark eye, would prefer ears higher set. Good length to body and well carried tail. Moved slightly close behind.

PGB (4) 1 Green’s Lady In Black at Witchstone, litter sister to the winner of JB and many of the same comments apply. Again, she could do with more width to skull, she has dark, well set eyes. Good neck into excellent shoulders and good length to body. Correct topline and tailset carried low. Textbook movement. 2 Goodfellow’s Nasabe Royal Rose, pleasing outline and size. I would prefer a touch more substance on her. Good head and expression, high set ears. Compact in body. Well set tail. Moved soundly.

LB (7) 1 Haffenden and Wood’s Nasabe Play The Game JW, beautiful, elegant bitch that I have admired ringside. She is still young but is coming into her own now. She is of ideal size and shown in gleaming coat. Long, wedge shaped head with excellent, candle-shaped ears sat back on flat skull. Small, dark eye giving an alert expression. Slightly arched neck into excellent shoulder, body of good length, topline curving from shoulder to loin, and falling again to tail. Straight front, good depth to chest, well arched feet. Well marked throughout with rich tan. Moved effortlessly with drive and excellent extension. Surely title-bound this year. BB. RBIS. 2 Evison and Serman’s Kikuchi Mulberry, another young bitch I have watched and admired. . So well balanced, neat head with super ears sat on the back of a flat skull. Small eyes giving an alert expression. Slightly arched neck into compact body. Confident on the move with good extension on the front and clean rear movement. I would prefer stronger pasterns. Dark tans, thumbprints have ran. 3rd Whitehouse’s Almaric Coco Chanel with Dalmonde JW.

O (5,1) 1 Harman’s Nasabe It’s On The Cards for Boimans, another beauty from this kennel, she presents an excellent outline. Super topline and low set tail which she maintains on the move. Feminine head, small, dark almond shaped eyes giving an alert expression, super ears sat on the back of her flat skull. Excellent neck and shoulders. Straight front and well arched feet. Correct markings and rich tan. Pleasing movement showing good extension and rear drive. Another who should easily pick up CCs. 2nd Ramsden & Kagzi’s CH Pallisandre Pocahontas, pleasing exhibit, feminine head, well set ears, her eyes are slightly round for me. Good neck into well laid shoulders. Slightly longer cast in body. Low set tail. Moved soundly with excellent front extension. 3rd Francis & Blatchford’s Witchstone Trouble Brewing at Peopleton JW.

VB (3) 1 Haffenden and Wood’s CH Witchstone Minnehaha. Where do I begin?! Another favourite of mine, a former BOB of mine. She is of excellent size and screams ETT with her elegant outline. Beautiful headpiece, long, wedge-shaped. Excellent candle-shaped ears which she uses at all times. Dark, expressive eyes. Slightly arched neck into clean shoulders and compact body. A joy to watch on the move, where she shows excellent extension and rear drive. Low-set tail. Had to give way to the younger bitches today. Still love her. 2nd Inch’s Edalene Never Let Me Go VW, pretty head with dark eye and alert expression. Straight front, well laid shoulders. Good length to body with low set tail. Moved soundly.
